Comments | They organised a marathon, The greatest race of all! The course they chose was treacherous, The keenest it might stall. The experts took the challenge, For they fear not what they face. But some they came in ignorance- To take on 'the great race'. There was a mother, and her girl, A father and his son, A grand-pa too - aged sixty-six Entered in that race. A native from New Guinea came, And never brought his shoes. They tried to offer him a pair- He continued to refuse! A hundred and twenty-one of them, Young and old alike, Lined up at the starting post, Before the day was bright. 'Go!'- and they were off, On their 43k hike, The challengers never guessing What Toowoomba's boys were like! The pace it was so fierce, That ere half the race was done, Forty injured entrants Had already quit the run! Ron Peters from Toowoomba town Never lost the lead, And all those fancy challengers Couldn't match his speed. For five hot hours they struggled in, To finish that long race, Sweating, writhing, trembling wretchs, With triumph on each face. To those who stayed the distance, I give to you a bow, For I was there -and ran it too- And am a cripple now! Anne Guyatt |
